Travel Guide & Recommendations

Aerial view of San José, Costa Rica
San José is more of a base than a beach destination, but it has plenty to offer: culture, food and mountains just minutes away. Here are the essential tips on transportation, safety and where to stay for your trip.
✨ What You Can't Miss
- 🎭National Theatre — The city's neoclassical jewel, with guided tours and a period-style café in the same building.
- 🥇Gold Museum & Plaza de la Cultura — A major collection of pre-Columbian goldwork beneath downtown's liveliest plaza, with museums and cafés steps away.
- 🛒Central Market — A maze of stalls and sodas serving traditional Costa Rican food, coffee and crafts, right downtown since the 19th century.
- 🌳La Sabana Park — The city's great green lung, with trails, a lake, the Costa Rican Art Museum and the National Stadium.
- 🌋Poás & Irazú volcanoes — Day trips from the capital to active craters surrounded by cloud forest. Leave early and book ahead.
- ☕Central Valley coffee — Visit a plantation in the nearby mountains to learn the coffee process, from bean to cup.

🏘️ Where to Stay
- Barrio Amón / Escalante: The historic, food-focused neighborhoods, with restored mansions, cafés and some of the city's best restaurants, a short distance from downtown.
- Paseo Colón / La Sabana: A modern area next to the large La Sabana park, with hotels, offices and good access. Comfortable and practical, with green spaces for walking and exercise.
- Escazú / Santa Ana: The western suburbs, calmer and more residential, with malls, restaurants and higher-end hotels. A good option if you prefer more quiet.
🚌 Getting Around
The historic center is walkable, but to move between neighborhoods the most practical options are official (red) taxis or ride-hailing apps. Costa Rica has no metro; city buses exist, though they are less clear for visitors. Avoid driving at rush hour, as traffic is heavy. For volcanoes, coffee plantations and national parks, the most comfortable choice is to book excursions with transport or a private driver. Book ahead for national park tickets that require a time slot.
🛡️ Safety & Tips
San José is safe in tourist and hotel areas, but petty theft is the main risk. Don't leave items visible in the car, keep your phone secure on the street and avoid walking at night in poorly lit parts of downtown; use official taxis or apps. In parks and at volcanoes, always follow ranger instructions and stay on marked trails.
