Seoul is orderly, safe and very easy to get around with its subway. Here are the essential tips on transportation, safety and where to stay for your trip.

✨ What You Can't Miss

  • 👑Gyeongbokgung Palace — The largest of Seoul's five grand palaces, with the changing of the guard ceremony and the throne hall. Renting a hanbok is a popular tradition.
  • 🏘️Bukchon Hanok Village — A neighborhood of traditional Korean houses on the hills between two palaces. Stroll calmly and respectfully: people live there.
  • 🗼N Seoul Tower & Namsan — Take the cable car or walk up to see the city from above, especially at sunset when the lights come on.
  • 🍜Gwangjang Market & street food — Stalls with bibimbap, tteokbokki and mung bean pancakes in one of the city's oldest markets. Come hungry.
  • 🏙️Dongdaemun & Cheonggyecheon — The curved-line design center and the restored urban stream that runs through downtown, ideal for an evening stroll.
  • 🕊️The DMZ, a day trip — The Demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas, just over an hour from Seoul, can only be visited with authorized tours; book ahead.

🏘️ Where to Stay

  • Jongno / Insadong: The historic heart, near the palaces, Bukchon and temples, with tea houses and galleries. The most convenient area for a culture-focused first visit.
  • Myeongdong / Jung-gu: Central and very well connected by subway, with shops, street food and plenty of hotels. Ideal for those who want convenience and shopping.
  • Hongdae / Mapo: The young, creative district, with live music, cafés, fashion and lively nightlife near a university. A busy, budget-friendly atmosphere.

🚌 Getting Around

The subway is the best way to get around: it is clean, punctual and signposted in English too. Get a T-money card on arrival and top it up as needed; it also works on buses and some taxis. From Incheon Airport, an express train, buses and taxis reach the center in roughly an hour. Download Naver Map or Kakao Map for routes and schedules, and avoid the subway at rush hour if you have luggage.

🛡️ Safety & Tips

Seoul is one of the safest major cities in the world, with very low violent crime and a good atmosphere at any hour. Be careful mainly with traffic: motorbikes sometimes use sidewalks and pedestrians cross in a hurry. In nightlife areas, watch your drink and belongings, and keep in mind that winter's extreme cold calls for proper clothing. If you join border-area excursions, always follow the rules of authorized tours.
