Seoul: Tradition and Future in One City

Seoul is the capital of South Korea and one of Asia's most dynamic metropolises. Joseon-dynasty palaces, traditional-house neighborhoods and temples sit alongside skyscrapers, design centers and a nightlife that never stops. Add an excellent subway, a food scene that runs from street markets to barbecue restaurants, and a pop culture that has gone global. It is an ideal destination for those seeking a different, well-organized trip.

💡 Fun Facts & History

  • 💡Seoul has been Korea's capital since 1392, when the Joseon dynasty chose it as the seat of its kingdom. Gyeongbokgung Palace was built a few years later, in 1395.
  • 💡The city has five grand royal palaces from the Joseon era: Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung and Gyeonghuigung, each with its own character.
  • 💡The Korean alphabet, hangul, was created in the 15th century under King Sejong the Great so ordinary people could learn to read and write easily. It is commemorated every year on October 9.
  • 💡The Han River runs through the city, dividing it into north and south. Its riverside parks are a popular spot for walking, cycling and enjoying delivered food outdoors.
  • 💡The changing of the guard ceremony in front of Gwanghwamun, the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace, recreates the rituals of the Joseon royal guard.
  • 💡The Seoul metropolitan area holds close to half of South Korea's population, and its subway network is one of the most extensive and efficient in the world.

🌍 What You Should Know

  • South Korea uses the won (KRW). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and tipping in restaurants or taxis is not customary.
  • The T-money card works on the subway and buses and can be topped up at convenience stores. For directions, apps like Naver Map or Kakao Map usually work better than Google Maps.
  • The trip from Ecuador is long and usually requires connections. Book early, consider a stopover to rest and prepare for a significant time difference.
