San Diego: The City of the Bay and the Sun
San Diego is the southernmost major city on the California coast, just a few miles from the Mexican border. It combines a harbor with a naval presence, beaches for every taste, a large urban park with museums, and mild weather most of the year. It is a city of well-defined neighborhoods: each has its own rhythm, and many can be explored on foot or with short rides.
💡 Fun Facts & History
- 💡In 1769 the first mission in California was founded in San Diego, and Old Town is regarded as the site of the first Spanish settlement in the state.
- 💡Balboa Park grew around the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, and much of its Spanish Colonial Revival architecture dates from that time.
- 💡The San Diego Zoo, next to Balboa Park, opened in 1916 and is one of the best-known zoos in the world.
- 💡The city is a major US Navy port; the aircraft carrier USS Midway now serves as a floating museum on the Embarcadero.
- 💡The Hotel del Coronado, opened in 1888 on Coronado Island, is one of the most recognizable historic beach hotels in the country.
- 💡Every July the city hosts Comic-Con International, one of the largest pop culture conventions in the world.

🌍 What You Should Know
- San Diego uses the US dollar (USD). Prices at stores and restaurants don't include sales tax, which is added at checkout, and tipping at restaurants is customary.
- The international airport (SAN) is very close to downtown. To move between the beaches, La Jolla and downtown, a car or ride-hailing gives you more freedom; downtown and the Embarcadero are easy to explore on foot.
- Although the weather is mild, nights and mornings by the sea can be cool, and the Pacific water is usually cold: bring a light jacket.

📅 Best Time to Visit
San Diego can be visited year-round thanks to its mild climate. September and October tend to bring sunny days and the most pleasant sea; spring is a good option with smaller crowds. Early summer often brings morning cloud cover along the coast, and July and August are peak season with more visitors. From December to March you may spot gray whales passing the coast, with a bit more rain. Book ahead if traveling during school holidays or Comic-Con.
