Travel Tips

Santa Cruz, Galápagos

🚌Getting Around

Puerto Ayora is compact and walkable. For the highlands (Los Gemelos, lava tunnels, tortoise farms) you'll need a taxi or tour — taxis charge ~$15-25 per trip. Speed boats to San Cristóbal and Isabela depart daily at 7:00 AM from the dock ($30, ~2.5 hrs). Water taxis to the Itabaca Channel (to get to Baltra/airport) cost $0.80. Rental bikes are a budget option for getting around town.

🏨Where to Stay

Downtown Puerto Ayora

The best location to be near restaurants, shops and the dock. From here you can walk to the Charles Darwin Station and easily book tours.

Darwin Station Area

Quieter than downtown, steps from the station and close to Tortuga Bay. Ideal if you prefer a more natural, relaxed atmosphere.

Bellavista / Highlands

Eco-lodges and ranches surrounded by wild giant tortoises. Cooler climate, ideal for those seeking to disconnect.

🛡️Safety

Santa Cruz is very safe. Puerto Ayora is a peaceful town where you can walk at night without issues. Main precautions: respect National Park rules (don't touch animals, maintain 2 meters distance), use biodegradable sunscreen (mandatory), carry water on highland hikes, and don't leave trash. In the ocean, follow guide instructions — currents can be strong.

💡Top Tips

💰

Budget

Meals at dock kiosks cost $5-8. Day tours to nearby islands range $80-200. National Park entry is $100 (paid upon arrival at Baltra airport).

📷

Photography

Bring a waterproof camera or case. Best photo moments are at Tortuga Bay at sunset and in the lava tunnels with giant tortoises.

🧴

Sun Protection

The equatorial sun is intense. Use biodegradable SPF 50+ sunscreen, hat and sunglasses. This is mandatory to protect the marine ecosystem.

🗓️

How Many Days

Minimum 3 nights in Santa Cruz to enjoy it. Ideal: 2 days on the island + 1-2 day tours to nearby islands (North Seymour, Bartolomé or South Plaza).

🥾

What to Bring

Comfortable shoes for walking on volcanic rock, light clothing, snorkel gear (or you can rent), reusable water bottle and insect repellent.

🌊

Best Snorkel Time

Go early to Las Grietas (before 9 AM) when the water is clearest. In the evening, the dock is amazing for spotting sharks and rays at night.
