Santa Cruz: The Gateway to the Archipelago

Santa Cruz is the most populated island and the nerve center of the Galápagos. In Puerto Ayora, its main town, you'll find the archipelago's greatest tourism infrastructure, with hotels, restaurants, shops and tour agencies. But beyond the town, the island reveals stunning volcanic landscapes, white sand beaches and breathtaking biodiversity.

🐢 Charles Darwin Research Station

Founded in 1964, this research station is the epicenter of conservation in the Galápagos. Here you can see the giant tortoise breeding program up close, learn about ecological restoration efforts and marvel at the unique biodiversity of these islands. It's also where the famous Lonesome George lived until his death in 2012.

🏖️ Tortuga Bay

Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Tortuga Bay is a paradise of white sand and turquoise waters. To get there, you walk 2.5 km on a paved trail surrounded by giant opuntia cacti. The first beach has strong surf ideal for surfing; the second (Playa Mansa) is a calm bay perfect for swimming, kayaking and spotting marine iguanas, white-tip reef sharks and rays.

🌋 Los Gemelos & The Highlands

In the highlands of Santa Cruz, about 30 minutes from Puerto Ayora, the landscape changes dramatically. The twin craters (Los Gemelos) are enormous volcanic sinkholes surrounded by Scalesia forest, an endemic tree. On nearby farms you can walk among giant tortoises in the wild, explore lava tunnels over a kilometer long and enjoy a cool, misty climate that contrasts with the coast.

🐟 Nymphs Bay & Las Grietas

Las Grietas are deep volcanic fissures filled with crystal-clear water, a mix of freshwater from the highlands and saltwater from the sea. Swimming and snorkeling between 40-foot volcanic rock walls is a unique experience. Nearby, Nymphs Bay is a tranquil arm of the sea surrounded by mangroves, ideal for kayaking and birdwatching.
