San Cristóbal: The Historic Capital of the Galápagos
San Cristóbal is the administrative capital of the Galápagos province and one of the archipelago's most impressive gems. Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, its main town, offers an authentic experience where sea lions sleep on waterfront benches, frigatebirds fly over the harbor and marine iguanas sunbathe on coastal rocks. It's an island where wildlife and urban life coexist in extraordinary fashion.
🦁 Lobería & Playa Mann
La Lobería is a rocky beach just minutes from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno where dozens of sea lions rest, play and breed. The trail leading there crosses a lava field colonized by marine iguanas. Playa Mann, even closer to town, is an urban beach where you can literally swim alongside sea lions — an experience you won't find anywhere else in the world.
🪨 Kicker Rock (León Dormido)
Kicker Rock is a spectacular volcanic rock formation that rises 148 meters above the ocean, an hour by boat from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. This remnant of an eroded volcanic cone is split into two massive rocks with a navigable channel between them. It's the best snorkeling and diving site in San Cristóbal: Galápagos sharks, hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, eagle rays and enormous schools of fish surround the submerged walls.
🐢 Interpretation Center & Frigate Bird Hill
The Interpretation Center tells the natural and human history of the Galápagos exceptionally well. From there, a trail climbs to Frigate Bird Hill (Cerro Tijeretas), one of the few places where both species of frigatebirds coexist: the great and the magnificent frigatebird. From the summit you get spectacular panoramic views of the harbor and coastline. Nearby is Playa Carola, ideal for watching the sunset.
🏝️ Punta Pitt & Cerro Brujo
Punta Pitt, on the eastern tip of the island, is the only place in the Galápagos where you can see all three booby species together: blue-footed, red-footed and Nazca. Access is by boat and requires a moderate hike. Cerro Brujo, on the northeast coast, offers one of the most photogenic beaches in the archipelago with white coral sand, perfect for snorkeling in shallow waters with turtles and rays.
