🚢Getting There
Isabela has no commercial flights. You arrive by speed boat from Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz ($30 each way, ~2.5 hours, departures at 6 AM and 3 PM). The ride can be rough — take motion sickness pills 30 minutes before. Upon arrival, there's an additional $10 entry fee collected at the dock.
🏨Where to Stay
Beachfront
Hotels and hostels on the main beach of Puerto Villamil. Direct ocean views and immediate access to the white sand beach. The best option.
Town Center
A few blocks from the beach. More affordable, close to restaurants and shops. Puerto Villamil is so small everything is within 10 minutes walking.
Eco-lodges
Rural options on the outskirts of town surrounded by nature. Ideal for those seeking total disconnection and ecological experience.
🛡️Safety
Isabela is extremely safe and peaceful. The town has almost no traffic — bicycles are the main transport. Bring enough cash as there are few ATMs and not all businesses accept cards. Biodegradable sunscreen is mandatory throughout the National Park.
💡Top Tips
Sierra Negra
Reserve a full day for the volcano hike ($45-55 with guide). It's 16 km round trip. Leave early (7 AM) and bring water, snacks, and waterproof clothing — weather changes quickly at the summit.
Bike Rentals
Rent a bike for $10-15/day and explore the Wall of Tears, Wetlands, and flamingo lagoons on your own. It's the best way to get around Isabela.
Los Túneles
Half-day boat tour ($100-130). One of the best snorkeling sites in the Galápagos with lava formations, turtles, seahorses, and white-tip reef sharks.
How Many Days
Minimum 3 nights. Day 1: Bike to Wall of Tears + Wetlands. Day 2: Sierra Negra. Day 3: Los Túneles. Sierra Negra and Los Túneles need separate days.
Cash
Bring enough cash from Santa Cruz. Isabela has ONE ATM that frequently runs out of money. Some hotels and restaurants accept cards with a 5-10% surcharge.
Flamingos
The flamingo lagoons in the Wetlands are free and accessible by bike. The best time to see them is early morning or at sunset.
