Barcelona: Art, Sea & Modernisme
Barcelona is one of the few major European cities that combines beach, mountain, and architectural heritage unlike anywhere else in the world. Antoni Gaudí's mark is everywhere, from the unmistakable Sagrada Familia to Park Güell, while the Gothic Quarter preserves streets dating back to Roman-era Barcino. All of it steps from the Mediterranean.
💡 Fun Facts & History
- 💡The Sagrada Familia, started by Gaudí in 1882, is still under construction more than a century later. Its central tower, dedicated to Jesus Christ, is expected to be completed in the coming decades.
- 💡Barcelona is one of the few major European cities with its own beach right in the city center. The Barceloneta beaches were expanded for the 1992 Olympic Games, which transformed the entire waterfront.
- 💡Park Güell was originally planned as a luxury housing development that was never completed. Today it's a public park and UNESCO World Heritage Site with some of the city's most photographed views.
- 💡The Gothic Quarter preserves the layout and walls of ancient Roman Barcino, founded over 2,000 years ago, mixed together with medieval architecture.
- 💡FC Barcelona, founded in 1899, is far more than a football club: it's a symbol of Catalan identity with one of the largest stadiums in Europe.
- 💡Catalonia has its own language, Catalan, co-official with Spanish. You'll see both languages side by side on streets, menus, and signage throughout the city.

🌍 What You Should Know
- Spain uses the euro (€). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, though it's worth carrying some cash for small markets.
- Watch out for pickpockets on Las Ramblas, the metro, and the busiest tourist areas — it's the city's biggest real risk.
- El Prat airport is well connected to downtown by metro and train. You won't need a car to get around the city.
