Wat Arun at sunset, Bangkok

Wat Arun at sunset, Bangkok

Bangkok is best enjoyed among golden temples, canals, and night markets. Here are the essential tips on transportation, safety, and where to stay to make the most of your trip.

✨ What You Can't Miss

  • 🏯The Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew — Thailand's most famous royal complex, with the Emerald Buddha temple and gold-and-color architecture. Arrive early and dress with shoulders and knees covered.
  • 🛕Wat Pho & the Reclining Buddha — A huge temple next to the Grand Palace, famous for its golden Reclining Buddha and as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage.
  • 🌇Wat Arun — The Temple of Dawn, across the river. Take the small ferry over and, at sunset, watch its silhouette from the opposite bank.
  • 🍜Street Food in Yaowarat — Chinatown fills with stalls at dusk: noodles, seafood, desserts, and much more, in one of the city's best food walks.
  • 🛍️Chatuchak Weekend Market — One of the largest markets in the world, with thousands of stalls of clothing, crafts, and home decor. It opens mainly on weekends.
  • 🛶Canals & River by Boat — Explore the Thonburi khlongs by long-tail boat and discover stilt houses and hidden temples far from the traffic.

🏘️ Where to Stay

  • Sukhumvit: The modern area, with shopping malls, restaurants, and nightlife, well connected by BTS. Convenient for a first trip.
  • Chao Phraya Riverside: Hotels with river views and boat access to the Grand Palace and Wat Arun. A calmer, more elegant atmosphere.
  • Rattanakosin (Old City): For history lovers: close to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and traditional markets, with boutique hotel options.

🚌 Getting Around

The BTS and MRT are the fastest way to get around and avoid the traffic. For the temples in the old city, combine a Chao Phraya River boat with short taxi or Grab rides. Tuk-tuks are part of the experience, but agree on the price before you get in and keep in mind they are often more expensive than a metered taxi.

🛡️ Safety & Tips

Bangkok is generally safe for travelers, but keep the usual precautions: watch your belongings in markets and crowded areas. Be wary of anyone who tells you a temple is closed and offers to take you somewhere else: it is a well-known scam. Use metered taxis or ride-hailing apps, drink bottled water, and respect temple rules and the royal family.
