Bangkok: Temples, Flavors & River Life
Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is an intense metropolis where golden temples share space with skyscrapers, street markets and shopping malls. The city is organized around the Chao Phraya River, with the Grand Palace and Wat Arun on its banks, and it offers one of the most vibrant food scenes in Asia, from street stalls to fine dining.
💡 Fun Facts & History
- 💡Thais call the city Krung Thep ("city of angels"). Its full ceremonial name is one of the longest place names in the world.
- 💡Bangkok became the capital in 1782, when King Rama I moved the court to the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River and founded the Chakri dynasty, which still reigns today.
- 💡The Grand Palace was the official residence of Thailand's kings for generations. Inside is Wat Phra Kaew, the temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most sacred in the country.
- 💡Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, has a central tower (prang) decorated with porcelain fragments and shells. It looks especially striking at sunset, from the opposite bank of the river.
- 💡Its old canals (khlongs) earned it the nickname "Venice of the East". You can still explore some of them by long-tail boat on the Thonburi side.
- 💡Yaowarat, the Chinatown district, turns at night into one of the best places in Bangkok to try street food.

🌍 What You Should Know
- Thailand uses the Thai baht (THB). ATMs are everywhere in the city, but carrying some cash is useful for markets and food stalls.
- The BTS (Skytrain) and MRT (metro) bypass the traffic and cover much of the tourist area. On the river, Chao Phraya boats connect several temples.
- To enter temples and the Grand Palace, cover your shoulders and knees. The climate is hot and humid all year: bring light clothing, sunscreen, and a foldable umbrella.
