The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at sunset

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at sunset

Abu Dhabi combines culture, beaches and desert in an orderly, quiet city. Here are the essential tips on transportation, safety and where to stay for your trip.

✨ What You Can't Miss

  • 🕌Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — One of the largest mosques in the world, in white marble with more than 80 domes. Visit in the late afternoon to see the change of light.
  • 🎨Louvre Abu Dhabi — A universal museum under a dome that casts a "rain of light," on Saadiyat Island. The architecture is as much a star as the collections.
  • 🌇The Corniche — Several kilometers of seaside promenade with a beach, bike lane and skyline views. Perfect at sunset.
  • 👑Qasr Al Watan & Qasr Al Hosn — Two faces of Emirati power: the presidential palace open to the public and the city's oldest historic fort.
  • 🏎️Yas Island — Theme parks, the Yas Marina circuit and a beach, minutes from the airport. Ideal for traveling with children or teens.
  • 🌿Mangroves & desert — A kayak paddle through the mangroves and a sunset desert excursion show the natural landscape around the city.

🏘️ Where to Stay

  • Corniche / Downtown: The most central area, with the waterfront promenade, restaurants, malls and good connections. Ideal for a first visit and for getting around on foot in stretches.
  • Saadiyat Island: The city's cultural district, home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi and pale-sand beaches. Resort hotels and a calm, elegant atmosphere.
  • Yas Island: The entertainment district: theme parks, the Formula 1 circuit, a beach and hotels aimed at families and race weekends.

🚌 Getting Around

The most practical ways to get around are official taxis and ride-hailing apps, with reasonable fares and air conditioning. There is an urban bus network, but visitors usually find taxis more convenient between areas. Distances between attractions are long, so group your visits by area (Corniche, Saadiyat Island, Yas Island). To get here from Dubai, there are buses and private transfers by road of roughly an hour and a half to two hours.

🛡️ Safety & Tips

Abu Dhabi is one of the safest cities for travelers, with very low street crime. The focus is on local norms: dress respectfully outside hotels and beaches, avoid public displays of affection, don't photograph government buildings or people without permission and follow drone rules. Check restrictions on prescription medication before you travel. In summer, stay hydrated and avoid the midday sun.
